Hi everyone! Welcome back to another blog. This week, I want to discuss the lovely topic of waxing. Either you already have done it, want to do it, or have questions as to why people put themselves through the pain. I first want to give a little backstory and some history on waxing.
Beauty trends from Ancient Egypt have followed us to the present, with body hair removal being a very popular one. It was seen as low class for men or women to have body hair, so they utilized sea shells for tweezers, pumice stones, and a mixture of sugar and beeswax for hair removal.
Continuing on to the Roman Empire, it was also seen as low class to have body hair, which is why they also utilized different methods to remove the hair all over the body during this time.
In the Middle Ages, the focus was more so on facial hair removal. Also using makeshift tweezers and sugar waxes, eyebrow hair would be removed to enlarge the forehead, a desirable trait at the time.
In the late 1900s, bathing suits became quite popular which increased the need for hair removal devices such as razors. Waxes became a product soon after and the Brazilian waxing trend was also birthed at a salon in New York City. 7 women from Brazil known as “the J sisters” began offering different kinds of genital waxing. Brazilian waxing is known for removal of all hair, as the bikinis in Brazil are so tiny!
Fast forward to now, and the waxing trend really has not slowed down any. There are hundreds of different brands of waxes and thousands of people in the Country that specialize in providing waxing services. In 2016, the hair removal business had grown and is now a multi billion dollar industry.
You may be asking yourself, what is the point of waxing if I can just shave my own body?
Waxing does more for your skin than shaving does… by a long shot. There are pros and cons to both, though, which is why you should talk to a specialist before your appointment to make sure it is right for you!
Waxing removes hair from the root, destroying the hair follicle over time. This slows down and eventually prevents new hair from growing. With a proper regimen, your hair will be significantly finer over time and grow back slower! Shaving doesn’t and -won’t- do that!
Now a days, all hair removal methods are available for a consumer to purchase and use. You can buy razors, soft strip wax, hard stripless wax, epilators, Nair, and even at home laser hair removers!!
There’s a reason why people study the process of hair removal before being certified in performing it: you can seriously damage your skin. I have seen and heard some horror stories of at home hair removal. Waxing is going to be painful but finding someone who is trained properly can ease your mind and make it go much quicker. There is also a specific way to perform waxing to achieve optimal results! Don’t forget that pre waxing and post waxing instructions also are highly important.
Waxing doesn’t have to start with a Brazilian. If you’re interested and new to waxing services, start slow. Try an eyebrow cleanup and see how you feel from there. I never recommend at home hair removal other than shaving because almost everything else can be quite harsh!
Be nice to your skin and it will be nice to you back π
