Why Skincare Has Become Fast Beauty (And How It’s Evolving)

An oversaturated market is never a good thing. More and more brands being created leading to a plethora of products hitting the shelves and e-commerce – consumers are flooded with simply too many options. How have the new wave of TikTok trends helped and hurt the skincare industry? Is Fast Beauty hurting the world more than we even know?

What is “Fast Beauty”?

Just as fast fashion made its mark, the beauty industry is always desperately trying to keep up with the ever changing landscape. Beauty brands are creating products faster than ever, and the time frame of product conception to stocking the shelves is much shorter. This usually means lower quality and less sustainable packaging, too.

The hard truth is that regardless of a brads ethos, no one starts a brand to cure the world’s eco-crisis. Pumping out products at a faster rate, higher pollution and more waste = not so good for Mother Earth. How do brands keep up with trends, while also staying sustainable?

How TikTok Changed The Landscape

The beauty era of Youtube definitely changed the way Millennials chose which beauty products to purchase.

Recently, though, short-form video content is more popular than ever with TikTok raising supreme over other social sharing apps. With that comes a new trend surfacing seemingly every week and brands are striving to keep up. More products pumped through the pipeline, more social media ads being shown…sometimes it feels like the trend has already passed before I even received my product in the mail?!

The Evolving Landscape

Brands are seeking authentic reviews from influencers and UGC (user-generated content) creators alike, making everything just seem more personal. Skinimalism has also become more popular recently with the “less is more” approach.

Skin cycling, a term coined by Dr. Whitney Bowe, also reveals that you don’t need to own a lot of skincare to meet your skincare goals. This four day routine limits the products necessary to only about 5 products. Even though the landscape is changing, are the buying habits actually matching up? The statistics show the beauty industry to reach an all time high of over $784 billion by 2025 (source). Just the skincare market alone is set to increase in nearly 25% in the next 5 years (source)!

My Thoughts

Skincare is going to go through phases just like any trend you see at NYFW. As a skincare professional, I try my best to debunk skincare myths and talk about which trend is actually worth following. Since there is a new one every week, I could really just center all of my content around that idea! But, I prefer to steer fellow junkies toward effective ingredients, affordable alternatives, and making a routine work for the your lifestyle!

Unfortunately, I don’t see beauty slowing down any time soon. We can do our part to purchase from more sustainable brands, not over-buy, and recycle when we can. But, overall it is hard to be Earth conscious in this world of mass consumerism.

What are your thoughts on Fast Beauty? Do you like seeing all the new trends, or does it make you feel overwhelmed?
