Let’s Review Fenty Skin again…Another flop or miracle Moisturizer?

Rihanna is no question an absolute QUEEN when it comes to the work she has done in the beauty industry. She continues to be inclusive and innovative with her launches through Fenty Beauty, Savage Fenty (lingerie line) and now Fenty Skin. I did dabble in the first launch of Fenty Skin: the cleanser, Fat Water toner, and Hydroviser SPF. I was all around unimpressed by the products due to strong fragrance and some ingredient blunders that overall did not win this skin care junkie’s heart. But after leaving you with a remark on the last post saying I was excited for Fenty Skin’s next launches, here I am with the brand new Instant Rest Overnight Recovery Gel-Cream.

Here is my unboxing of the new Fenty Skin moisturizer. You can see all of the components that I will outline below.

New Fenty Skin Launch: Overnight Recovery Gel-Cream, 1.7 oz $40

Package and Design

Yet again, Fenty Skin definitely earns major points for packaging. I love the fact that it comes with a refillable container, so you only have to purchase the pod each time. They do this with the sunscreen as well. The enclosed spatula is also very nice, so you don’t lose it (which I always do!). The light purple seen throughout the skincare line is such a pretty, gender-neutral choice that works for anyone’s vanity or cabinet.

Overall, I absolutely love the design. I love the packaging of all of Fenty Skin’s products! Super innovative, clean and pretty, and reusable. All wins for me.

Claims and Ingredients

The best way to test if a product is worth the money has a lot to do with the claims it makes. Due to outdated beauty laws, manufacturers can say quite a bit about a product by actually proving nothing. So, lets see what Fenty Skin promises of their new night cream:

Revives skin overnight for a refreshed glow by day. Helps skin bounce back to life.

Fine lines and wrinkles look instantly better, as well as improving over time.

Pores and Dark Spots visibly improved in one week*

*Based on an 8 week study done on 56 women

As far as the pores go, after one week of use I noticed my skin was more consistently clear than before I started using it. The size of my pores was not a noticeable change for me but my pores were kept clean, making them appear smaller regardless. I do not have any dark spots to specifically test this claim on, so I judged overall brightness. My skin definitely had a more even tone and was bright the next morning. The fine lines on my forehead were definitely plumped by the hydration of the cream. I will need to continue to use this before knowing any long lasting benefits.

Note- I did not change any other aspects of my routine, but I did let up a bit on the retinol use to test the Fenty Skin night cream’s ability for smoothing texture.

My skin overall felt hydrated, refreshed, clear and bright the next morning. As the week went on, my skin stayed clear!

Key ingredients:

  • Vegan, cruelty free and gluten free
  • Niacinamide- evens skin tone, cleans pores
  • Hyaluronic Acid- hydrates
  • Kalahari Melon Oil- antioxidant and vitamin rich
  • Japanese Raisin Tree- detoxifies skin
  • Australian lemon Myrtle- reduces oil production
  • Cactus Flower & Green Tea- antioxidant rich

The dark spot fighting ingredient can be found just halfway through the ingredients list: ADANSONIA DIGITATA FRUIT EXTRACT, also known as baobab seed oil. This potent extract is used throughout the Fenty Skin line. It is super high in Vitamin C, omega fatty acids, as well as anti-inflammatory properties. This, in combination with the other plant antioxidants, could definitely prove to be effective in treating dark spots.

My thoughts are overwhelmingly positive when it comes to the ingredients of this night cream. I was unsure about even doing another Fenty Skin Review, but this product’s mix of potent extracts, antioxidants and skin balancing ingredients forced me to purchase. It is a pricier night cream, but you are receiving high quality skincare ingredients along with the luxurious packaging.

Texture and Feel

However, even the best skin condition-fighting ingredients won’t work properly without a good formulation. Since this is called a gel-cream, I expected it to feel moisturizing but sink in rather quickly. It definitely does have that jelly texture but it took longer to sink in than I expected! It also felt kind of sticky the first two times I used it. I find it to be incredibly unique, honestly, because I have tried so many moisturizers and this texture really stood out.

This up close texture shot shows the unique gel consistency, and how it is still quite rich.

Did I like it, though? Honestly, not at first. Like I said, it felt sticky! I realized by using the spatula, I was just picking up way too much. Using half of what I started with seriously helped the stickiness. After a few more nights using this, I started looking forward to the texture and feel.

Overall it has a unique and rich formula. Oily skin types will benefit from the increased hydration but less heavy feeling. I believe it is suitable for all skin types, especially those looking for anti-aging and hyperpigmentation problem solvers in their routine.

Scent

Fragrance was definitely a popular talking point about Fenty Skin’s original launch. I mentioned in my previous review that the scent in their products are quite overwhelming, and that is coming from someone who doesn’t typically mind fragranced skincare. When I first opened this moisturizer, I was amazed at how strong the fragrance was. It smells nice, don’t get me wrong- like a fruity but floral perfume. When a cleanser has fragrance it does not bother me much since it is washed away and no longer lingers. However when a moisturizer has a strong fragrance, it sits on the skin and can be smelled for hours after application!

As I said before though, I was using wayyyy too much of this product at first. As I adjusted the amount of cream, the scent became much more bearable and I honestly just got used to it. It does linger on the skin a bit.

Overall, I believe that if you do not like fragranced products at all, then just skip it. The fragrance of this overnight recovery gel cream will not deter me from using it and re-buying in the future. If they did ever make a fragrance free option, though, I would choose that one instead.

Overall Rating of the new Fenty Skin launch

I am giving the Fenty Skin Overnight Recovery Gel Cream a stamp of approval! Since incorporating it into my routine, I have had virtually no breakouts and very even hydration. The enclosed spatula adds to the luxorious feel and the lavender packaging stands out among my skincare products. I am happy to have a new favorite night cream to keep in my rotation.

What are your thoughts on the new Fenty Skin moisturizer? Are you buying it or passing?

    1. I am glad you enjoyed my videos! I will be sure to use them more often. Yes, the scent is the one major negative of this moisturizer. The rest of the points make up for it, in my opinion. I am hoping they decrease the fragrance use in the future!

  1. I wanted to love the Fenty Skin moisturizer cream you reviewed because I broke out while testing it out on my forearm. I’m glad that it worked for you, and I enjoyed reading your review; and the unboxing is an awesome idea to add to your blog post.

    1. Awww I know you had mentioned you had sensitive skin, and this one could definitely cause irritation due to the fragrance. I am glad you patch tested it first! 🙂 Thanks so much for reading friend!
