Mascara for Short Lashes Worth Buying and ones to Avoid

Short lashes don’t have to prevent you from getting that amazing, falsies look from mascara! Recently, I did an instagram poll asking what makeup item people can’t live without. Not to my surprise, mascara was the most common response. Same here! Mascara is my absolute favorite. I have tried so many kinds…so you don’t have to.

Do you still own the classic pink and green Maybelline mascara that has been around forever?? Throw it out. Girl, it’s time to move on. Maybe you think it is the end all be all of mascaras but I can assure you that there are other options that will change your life.

Best Mascara for Short Lashes

1. L’Oréal Bambi Eye Mascara, $10.99

I love the volume I get from this mascara. It definitely gives that full look without being too wet of a formula. It is super affordable and lasts longer than other drugstore options.

2. Lancôme Monsieur Big Mascara, $25

This is my all time favorite mascara. I get so many compliments on my lashes when I use this! Definitely stick with the original, not the waterproof version. It doesn’t flake or smudge and removes easily. This is perfect for those stubborn, short lashes because it really coats each lash well.

3. Pat McGrath Labs FetishEyes Mascara, $30

This formula is what I would have created had Pat McGrath not beat me to the punch. It is wet and ultra black!! It gives me super long lashes that are clump free. The brush is very dense and does a good job heavily coating the lashes. This mascara is the perfect option for my glowing makeup tutorial.

4. Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara, $25

I think we have all tried this by now, and if you haven’t…do it! It is such a good formula for that classic, fluffy lash look. I love the sturdiness of the packaging as well. I do find that this does not last as well throughout the day if you have oilier skin.

It’s worth noting that my preference is definitely a natural mascara brush that isn’t plastic. I noticed that the natural brushes do better at giving me that length PLUS volume I desire. All of those mentioned are not plastic, except for the Bambi Eye. It is also less of a wet formula if that fits your preference more. Another plastic brush option that is a bit more pricey would be the Benefit Roller Lash.

Mascaras to Avoid

1. NARS Climax Mascara, $24

This one was just a mess. It melted all down my face and barely gave me any curl. Love the packaging, but that’s about it.

2. L’Oréal Voluminous Carbon Black Mascara, $8.99

I have tried this mascara SO MANY TIMES. And each time is marked with raccoon eyes. Not cute! There are other L’Oréal mascaras that work better than this one, like Lash Paradise. This would be a bad mascara for short lashes because it would turn into a clumpy, wet mess.

3. Clinique High Impact Mascara, $19.50

This seems to really be a cult favorite. Probably because it’s Clinique, and people will follow Clinique until the end of the Earth. Don‘t be mad at me! But my job is to steer you in the right direction. Skip this mascara!

4. Essence Lash Princess False Effect Mascara, $4.99

Again, another cult favorite. This mascara, although super cheap, dries up after basically three uses. I can buy ONE Lancôme mascara, and go through about 4 of these. I don’t feel like the formula is bad, and it does give me some length. However, it is way too dry and doesn’t last.

Overall, I think you can see the huge difference in my lashes with all of my faves. I like an ultra black look with volume and length- which, I definitely achieved with each one!

To Curl or Not to Curl

I did not curl my lashes in any of the pictures above, but I normally would before applying my coats of mascara. I chose not to in the photos so you could see what each mascara does on its own! My favorite curler is the Shiseido Lash Curler. It is unfortunately rather expensive….but holy cow my lashes stand straight up when I use it. I also like the Tweezerman curlers as well. Some lashes do great with curling and last much longer throughout the day, while some coarse and thick lash types may not benefit from it as much. If you want to test it out then be sure to use a good one!

So, have you tried any of my favorites before or do you want to? Which mascara do you use every day? Comment below!

  1. I have weird lashes. The lashes on 1 of my eyes sticks straight out. With your suggestion a while back, I started using the Lancome Monsieur big Volume. It is a life changer! I might have to try the Too Faced Better than Sex Mascara though!

    1. I am glad that it has worked so well for you! If you are wanting to try something new, with pretty pink packaging, definitely go for it!
