Myths you believe about your Skin

Hello everyone and welcome back to another blog! I am going to be calling you out on this one…we’re talking about some popular myths I hear about skin that many people believe is true. I’m here to set the record straight and hopefully help you understand your skin a bit more!

  1. Scrubs are the only way to exfoliate

I think by now we have all heard our fair share about face scrubs being too harsh and to avoid most of them, so maybe this myth is beginning to be outdated. However, I still believe that many of us don’t understand the other form of exfoliating! There are two forms of exfoliants: chemical and mechanical. A facial scrub, uses mechanical exfoliation by physically sloughing off dead skin cells. Chemical works below the surface of the skin to break the bonds between skin cells and replenish them. Some examples would be salicylic acid, glycolic acid, and lactic acid. Choosing a form of exfoliation depends largely on skin type, but chemical exfoliants tend to be more effective and can help with other skin issues as well, like dark spots and fine lines!

2. Massaging the face causes wrinkles

It’s actually the opposite! Massage increases circulation and stimulates our collagen and elastin in order to firm and tone the skin. People tend to know that you must massage in upward motions on the face in order to be the most effective. Also, it is okay to do gentle massage around the eye area! Don’t pull, but gently tap or slide the fingers around the eye with and eye cream helps to decrease puffiness.

3. You only need SPF when it’s sunny, or at the beach

False! I know we’ve all heard it, but hopefully repeating it helps people realize the importance of sunscreen. For the lightest skin, it only takes 5 minutes in the sun before damage may occur! Even in the Winter, damaging UVA and UVB rays still cause skin damage, leading to possible cancer all year round. Don’t risk it- wear sunscreen!

4. Acne only occurs in teens

I hear this a lot at the party, “I’m too old to be getting pimples!”. Actually, adult acne is more common than you think. It is more often prevalent in teenagers due to puberty, but our skin continues to change throughout our life. We can get new allergies to food, hormonal changes, or climate change. Don’t be ashamed of your skin! Speak with a professional about what could help, but never feel like you are the only adult with pimples.

5. Facials are for luxury only

Although they may hold a high price point, facials are for more than just relaxation. They help stimulate Collagen, clean pores, hydrate, and plump. Depending on what facial you choose, it can do a lot more than that as well! Your skin is your body’s largest organ and needs to be cared for daily. Facial treatments help monthly by using professional grade products to enhance skin health.

Don’t feel ashamed if you have been fooled by any of these myths. I hope today I was able to change your mind a bit! What other myths have you heard that you may or may not still believe?? Like and comment below!
