Do You Really Need This Skincare Ingredient? Peptides Skincare Benefits

There are several ingredients in skincare that we see and know they’re good for us, but probably don’t fully understand why. On your skincare shelf I bet you have a product or two with peptides in them- a powerful ingredient that improves the skin health in many ways. But, do you really need to use them? Let’s go through what peptides are and all the peptides skincare benefits!

What Are Peptides in Skincare?

Peptides are building blocks of important proteins needed for healthy skin functions. This includes the commonly discussed collagen and elastin necessary for strong, resilient and firm skin. Overall though, peptides are used throughout the entire body to ensure proper cell functions! So, if we already have peptides in our body…why do we need skincare with peptides in it?

Aging and Peptides: Looking at Research

As we age, our body produces essential proteins slower- for example, we create 1% less collagen per year starting at age 20 (source). But, we can supplement the body in order to help slow this process. By applying peptides topically, signals are sent to stimulate production of essential collagen and elastin. Over time we can see a difference in our skin if we add in the right topical treatments. You can see improved appearance of fine lines, firmness, overall skin health and complexion by using effective peptides skincare formulations.

Here’s some recent research from 2020 showing the anti wrinkle benefits of peptides:

In order to evaluate the anti-wrinkle benefits of the peptide complex in vivo, a clinical study was performed on 22 healthy Asian female volunteers older than 40 years. As a result, significant improvements in skin wrinkles for all of the five sites were observed after two weeks, as assessed by skin topographic measurements. Collectively, these results demonstrate the anti-aging efficacy of the peptides complex.

Unfortunately, not all peptides in cosmetics have been researched thoroughly. This article from 2016 discusses the efficacy of different topical peptides so you can look for certain types in your skincare formulations for the best results.

Who Needs Peptides?

As I said before, peptides work to signal the cells to create more collagen, elastin, and so on. They can be used by all skin types since it is an essential protein that all skin types need! I especially recommend peptide skincare for anyone incorporating anti-aging products/ingredients.

I always have to include the reminder that no one skincare ingredient can work miracles. If so- we could really just call it the fountain of youth, right? We need to incorporate many good skincare ingredients and daily sun protection to see the best results from any product over time.

Peptides, sunscreen and antioxidants are a fantastic trio for slowing signs of aging and improving the skin health.

Peptides Skincare Products

I have been a fan of incorporating peptides into my skincare routine for years now. I don’t have a single product that is the best because it depends on the type of formulation you are looking for! Here are some options for all skin types and preferences:

I’m gonna say it: you do need this skincare ingredient. All skin types can choose the formulation that works for them, but in general peptides are a perfect fit no matter your concerns. Nowadays, you don’t even have to splurge on effective peptide treatments. By continuously working on the skin health and functions, you will see improvements from your daily skincare routine in no time.
